Lynn was born on August 26, 1946, in San Antonio, Texas, to Robert and Martha Rabel Kassner. He spent his childhood on Lake McQueeney and graduated from Seguin High School in 1964. Shortly after graduation, Lynn married his high school sweetheart, Connie Haas, on December 3, 1966, in Seguin. The couple moved to Austin not long after their wedding and welcomed their daughter, Christy, into their lives.

Throughout his career, Lynn had a long-standing association with IBM and later spent 10 years at Applied Materials.
