Georgetown to Celebrate Independence Day with Family-Friendly Festivities

Georgetown is gearing up for the 42nd Annual Sertoma Club Family July 4 Celebration, set to take place at San Gabriel Park on Friday, July 4. This highly anticipated event, which draws hundreds of residents and visitors alike, promises a day filled with fun, community spirit, and a spectacular fireworks display.

The celebrations kick off at 10 a.m. at San Gabriel Park, where families can enjoy a variety of activities. Thanks to the Georgetown Sertoma Club and the City of Georgetown, this year’s festival will feature live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, diverse food options, a petting zoo, and plenty of games and rides for both children and adults.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Hometown Parade, which starts at 11 a.m. at the low water crossing near the College Street bridge and wraps up at the large pavilion. Parade participants are encouraged to gather at 10:30 a.m. at the designated meeting point. Kids are invited to get creative by decorating their wagons or bicycles for the parade, which is sponsored by Georgetown Free Bikes and Vera Bank.

As the sun sets, the festivities culminate in a dazzling fireworks show set for around 9:30 p.m. The fireworks display will be launched by High Altitude Fireworks from McMaster Athletic Fields on North College Street, providing a stunning backdrop for the celebration. Ideal viewing locations include San Gabriel Park, VFW Park, and other vantage points across Georgetown.

Exciting New Features for 2023

This year’s celebration introduces exciting new experiences through a partnership with FREEDOM FUN. Attendees can look forward to engaging games, a petting farm, train rides, and more. Additionally, pricing for wristbands and rides has become more affordable, making it easier for families to participate in the celebration. With an increased number of food and craft vendors, as well as displays of classic cars and Model A vehicles, this year’s event promises to be a memorable one.

Important Details for Attendees

While admission to the event is free, certain children’s activities will have associated fees. It is recommended that attendees access San Gabriel Park via Morrow Street on North Austin Avenue. As parking is limited, carpooling is encouraged, with additional parking available at Georgetown High School. There will be designated handicapped parking areas for those who require them. However, parking at the McMaster Athletic Fields and Parks and Recreation Administration lots will be closed due to proximity to the fireworks fall zone.

In addition, North College Street will experience closures from 8 to 11 p.m. on July 4, specifically between the traffic circle and Holly Street, as the area is designated as the fireworks fall zone. During this time, no parking, standing, or sitting will be permitted along that stretch of road.

As a safety measure, personal fireworks are strictly prohibited within Georgetown city limits and within 5,000 feet of the city unless explicitly authorized by the Georgetown Fire Department. Residents should be aware that violations and unauthorized fireworks can lead to fines reaching up to $2,000 per firework.

Dog owners are advised to keep their pets indoors during the celebrations to avoid any potential issues, as the sound of fireworks can be distressing to animals.
