He is survived by his wife Kathy Olson, whom he married 32 years ago, and their daughter Michelle Berryman, along with son-in-law Mason Berryman. The family also includes beloved dogs Kuba and Dolly Parton. J.B.’s passing marks the end of an era for those who knew him.

J.B. was born and raised in Ludowici, Georgia, where he left a significant mark during his high school years at Ludowici High School. He graduated in 1959, having played as a point guard on the high school’s basketball team, which notably reached the state finals. The team’s spirit and reputation made a considerable impact on their community and are fondly remembered by local residents.

After high school, J.B. attended Brewton Parker College in Mount Vernon, Georgia. He later embarked on a career with the Georgia Prison System and worked at General Motors in Atlanta. In 1963, he enlisted as a Private in the Georgia National Guard to supplement his income following his marriage. J.B. excelled in his military career, graduating from the Georgia Military Institute in officer candidate school in 1966 and ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1989. His service included two tours in Vietnam and assignments in Europe.

In 1973, while serving in the U.S. Army, J.B. was sent to the University of Mississippi, where he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1974. Although he cherished his time at Ole Miss, he faced disappointment for not being able to walk on to the basketball team. Demonstrating his commitment to education, he earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1977.

Following his military retirement, J.B. transitioned into a role as a defense contractor. His work took him to various locations including California, South Carolina, Florida, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, where he continued to support troops. Throughout his professional journey, J.B. was known for his dedication to family and community. He supported Kathy’s various career paths, including her tenure with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and gained a reputation among her colleagues as “the grill master.” Together, they hosted numerous family gatherings, showcasing their strong hospitality and affection for their pets.

J.B. was celebrated for his infectious laughter, fun-loving personality, and unique sense of humor, often involving playful pranks and a passion for fishing. His joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege to know him.

A memorial service to honor J.B.’s life will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 4:00 PM at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Take Me Home Transport, a charity dedicated to supporting pet adoptions, reflecting J.B.’s love for animals.
