Broadband Expansion in Jasper, Texas

News Summary

Jasper, Texas, is set to benefit from a $1.3 billion broadband expansion investment plan aimed at increasing internet access in the region. Spectrum spearheads local growth, launching Technician Centers and boosting job opportunities. Over 11,000 homes and businesses are now connected, with additional funding supporting high-speed internet services statewide. Texas is committed to enhancing broadband access, crucial for health, education, and economic development.

Texas is preparing to submit a substantial $1.3 billion investment plan to the federal government aimed at enhancing broadband access, particularly in rural areas. This move comes as part of a restructuring of broadband grants initiated under the administration of President Donald Trump.

The state has been actively pursuing improvements in local fiber infrastructure, resulting in significant growth across the region. Leading the charge is Spectrum, the nation’s foremost rural internet provider, which is launching a comprehensive multi-year initiative designed to expand broadband services while simultaneously creating new job opportunities in East Texas.

As part of this initiative, Spectrum has recently inaugurated a new Technician Center in Jasper, Texas, representing a substantial investment of $1 million aimed at improving support for local services. The Jasper facility has already created over 30 jobs, employing field technicians and construction coordinators to bolster its operational capacity. Moreover, Spectrum’s expansion program has successfully connected more than 11,000 homes and businesses in Jasper County alone.

In addition to the Jasper center, Spectrum has established four other rural Technician Centers in East Texas, specifically in Mount Pleasant, Kilgore, Crockett, and Canton. Recent celebrations included a ribbon-cutting event at the Jasper facility, which was attended by local officials and community leaders to mark its anniversary.

Spectrum’s extensive initiative is part of a larger undertaking, with the company committing over $7 billion to private investment for expanding its fiber-optic network infrastructure nationwide, with plans to reach more than 1.7 million new locations.

On the state level, Texas has allocated $701.9 million through the Bringing Online Opportunities to Texas (BOOT II) program, which aims to bring broadband service to more than 95,000 unserved locations. To date, more than $424.6 million across various grants has been finalized, providing coverage to approximately 54,000 locations in counties including Bastrop, Carson, and Coleman.

The majority of grant projects are expected to deliver 1 Gbps symmetrical broadband service, along with affordable options for subscribers. This marks a significant step towards enhancing internet accessibility in underserved regions. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar underscored the importance of reliable high-speed internet for essential services such as healthcare and education, along with economic development.

Parent company of Spectrum, Charter Communications, is on track to contribute an additional $1.3 billion towards this broadband expansion in Texas. This investment encapsulates a $700 million network evolution project aimed specifically at delivering high-speed internet accessibility across the state.

Charter is also actively forming partnerships with public and private entities to enhance service provisions to about 133,000 homes through funding from the Federal Communications Commission’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. Furthermore, Texas has designated $1.5 billion for broadband development initiatives, which are being managed by the Broadband Development Office under the Comptroller’s direction.

As plans are currently underway, the completion of these broadband projects is expected by the end of 2026, ensuring that unserved areas receive necessary connectivity. The efforts being made at both federal and state levels, combined with significant private investment, poised Texas to make considerable strides in bridging the broadband gap in rural communities.
