Cannon Beach Surf Park Concept

News Summary

McKinney, Texas, is set to develop a $200 million surf park, Cannon Beach, which will feature a four-acre surf lagoon, a resort-style hotel, and various entertainment options. The project aims to transform the local recreation scene and bring economic growth to the area, creating over 700 jobs and attracting 300,000 annual visitors. Construction is expected to start in 2025 with the surf pool opening by late 2026.

Texas – McKinney is set to welcome a new multi-use development project called Cannon Beach, a $200 million venture developed by Los Angeles-based Aventuur. The project will be located at the northeast corner of Stacy Road and Texas Highway 121 and will encompass 35 acres.

The centerpiece of the Cannon Beach development will be a four-acre surf lagoon powered by advanced Wavegarden technology, capable of generating up to 1,000 artificial waves per hour. The facility aims to provide a surfing experience that is currently unique to the North Texas region, with the only similar establishment located in Waco.

In addition to the surf lagoon, the Cannon Beach project will feature a resort-style hotel complete with a rooftop pool and various event spaces such as cabanas offering food service. Plans for further entertainment amenities include a skateboard park, a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a health club, along with various indoor recreational facilities.

Construction of Cannon Beach is anticipated to begin in 2025, with the opening of the first phase, including the surf pool, projected for late 2026. The city of McKinney is working in collaboration with the McKinney Economic Development Corporation and the McKinney Community Development Corporation on this initiative.

As part of its expected economic contribution, the Cannon Beach development is projected to generate over $2 billion in economic impact over the next 20 years, while creating more than 700 local jobs. Once operational, it is estimated that the site will attract approximately 300,000 visitors annually.

The city plans to review the site plan and incentive agreements for the project in early 2025, ensuring that the initiative aligns with community interests and needs. Local officials highlighted that Cannon Beach addresses a demand for family-centric activities and offers unique recreational experiences for both residents and tourists.

The Cannon Beach project follows the launch of Aventuur’s first surf-focused development in Mesa, Arizona, and reflects the developer’s vision of creating destinations that appeal to families, professionals, and entrepreneurs alike. While conceptual details are still under development, agreements related to infrastructure assistance and tax rebates are being finalized as part of the planning process.

This initiative is indicative of McKinney’s commitment to coupling innovative attractions with mindful urban planning, aimed at boosting economic growth. The Cannon Beach project promises to reshape recreational options in the region, positioning McKinney as a desirable destination for both locals and visitors.
