Police response to a bomb threat at Georgetown High School

News Summary

The Georgetown High School received a bomb threat on January 29, leading to the evacuation of students and extensive police search operations. A 16-year-old boy admitted to making the false claim, which authorities deemed not credible. Classes resumed the following day, and officials are now pursuing charges against the juvenile for making a terroristic threat.

Georgetown Police Investigate Bomb Threat Incident at Local High School

On January 29, 2025, Georgetown High School experienced a bomb threat that prompted immediate action from local authorities. A 16-year-old boy from Georgia has since admitted to making the false threat, which was confirmed to be not credible by the Georgetown Police Department.

Details of the Threat

The distressing call came in at approximately 7:08 a.m., with a male caller claiming that multiple bombs had been placed around Georgetown High School, located on North Austin Avenue. Quick to respond, the first police units arrived at the school within just nine minutes, at around 7:17 a.m.

In light of the serious nature of the threat, officials from Georgetown Independent School District (GISD) and the police took immediate precautionary measures. They decided to evacuate the school and move students to a safe and cleared location nearby for their protection.

Evacuation and Search Efforts

As part of the evacuation procedure, students present at the school were escorted outside safely, while school buses were redirected to an undisclosed location to ensure student safety. By 10 a.m., classes were officially canceled.

Law enforcement carried out a comprehensive search of the premises, during which they identified three items of interest. Specialized explosive detection dogs from both the Cedar Park Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety were brought in to assist in the inspection.

One item was found to be unusual enough to necessitate the involvement of the Austin Police Department’s bomb squad. After conducting thorough checks, it was revealed that the item was harmless and part of a student’s robotics project rather than any explosive device. No explosives were discovered during the search, debunking any misinformation circulating among the community.

Resolution of the Incident

By around 12:40 p.m., the Georgetown ISD announced that the campus had been cleared and was given the “all clear” signal for students and staff to return. Evening events scheduled for the day, including a Course Selection Fair, were confirmed to continue as planned.

Classes were set to resume on a normal schedule the following day, Thursday. The swift and coordinated response by police and school officials ensured that safety protocols were effectively implemented to protect the students.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

In response to the threat, the Georgetown Police Department is working closely with local prosecutors and authorities in Georgia to file charges against the juvenile involved. The upcoming charges will likely include a terroristic threat charge, classified as a third-degree felony.

This incident has served as a reminder of the seriousness of such threats. The Georgetown Police Department emphasized their commitment to community safety and expressed relief that no real danger existed.

Looking Forward

Following the event, Superintendent Dr. Devin Padavil indicated appreciation for the police’s diligence in ensuring student safety. Additionally, the district intends to review the incident to enhance existing safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

As the community moves forward, officials stress the importance of maintaining preparedness and responsiveness when it comes to threats of this nature.
