Georgetown High School Faces Bomb Threat, Students Evacuated and Safe!

It was an unusually tense morning for the students and staff at Georgetown High School. On January 29, 2025, just as the school day was about to start, a bomb threat was called in, sending shockwaves through the school community. The call was made to the Georgetown Police Department at approximately 7:08 a.m., claiming that explosive devices were placed on the school premises.

Swift Response from Authorities

Thanks to the quick response from the Georgetown Police Department, the situation was handled efficiently. Police were on the scene by 7:17 a.m., where they coordinated with the Georgetown Independent School District (GISD) to evacuate all students safely. Those who had already arrived at school were promptly moved to the Future Ready Complex, while buses that were en route were diverted to safer locations.

Suspicious Items Discovered

While police conducted a thorough search of the campus, three items were identified as suspicious. However, trained bomb detection canines checked them out, leading to a sigh of relief as all items were cleared. One item sparked particular interest, necessitating the involvement of the Austin Police Department’s Bomb Squad. Fortunately, they determined that this item was harmless and part of a student’s robotics project. Just another day of innovative learning at Georgetown High!

All Clear!

By around 12:40 p.m., the Georgetown Police Department confirmed that no explosives were found on campus, and students were given the “all clear” to return. A male juvenile, just 16 years old and residing in Georgia, was identified as the responsible party for making the bomb threat. This teen admitted to making the threat, which may lead to serious consequences, including charges for a third-degree felony related to a terroristic threat.

Classes on Hold but Events Continue

As it turned out, classes were canceled for the day due to the unfolding situation, but the school had managed to keep the evening’s scheduled events on track. Incredibly, the much-anticipated Course Selection Fair went ahead as planned, providing an opportunity for families to explore academic options amidst an otherwise hectic day.

Keeping Parents Informed

Georgetown ISD took the initiative to keep parents and the community updated throughout the morning’s events. Parents were asked to show IDs when picking up their children, ensuring a safe reunion after the scare. The district assured families that students would be supervised and fed until they could be picked up, allowing for a sense of security during a stressful situation.

Looking to the Future

Superintendent Devin Padavil expressed gratitude to the police for their rapid response, highlighting the importance of safety measures at schools. The district plans to review the incident to improve protocols and ensure the safety of students moving forward. Thankfully, the other schools in the district were unaffected and continued their normal operations.

Community Resilience

As the dust settles, the Georgetown community can breathe a bit easier knowing that safety is a top priority and that rapid action was taken to protect their students. It’s a reminder that, while we face challenges, we can always count on each other to stay safe and strong!
