In San Marcos, the starting salary for new teachers is set at $55,000. In contrast, Round Rock ISD has indicated that it can only offer a modest 1% increase in teacher pay for the upcoming year.

The recent increases were framed as essential, given the ongoing challenges of filling vacancies in several districts. Hutto ISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Cara Malone noted the difficulties faced by her district in attracting qualified teachers amidst a competitive hiring landscape.

Future Funding and Legislative Changes

Looking ahead, superintendents have raised concerns regarding the sustainability of pay raises in the absence of increased public school funding from the state legislature in the forthcoming sessions. Round Rock ISD Superintendent Hafedh Azaiez pointed out the potential risks to district operations if there is no increase in the basic allotment from the legislature, indicating a dire financial outlook without state support.

The topic of pay increases is not isolated to Georgetown ISD; Austin ISD is also in discussion over various compensation packages and is considering a potential tax rate increase to address a significant budget deficit estimated at $119 million.
