Georgetown Parks and Recreation Celebrates Park and Recreation Month
Georgetown, Texas – In July, the Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating Park and Recreation Month with a series of exciting activities aimed at strengthening community connections through parks and recreational opportunities. This year’s theme, “Build Together, Play Together,” resonates with the commitment of over 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals, alongside numerous part-time employees and dedicated volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain parks across the nation.
Interactive Adventure and Special Events
As part of the month-long festivities, Georgetown Parks and Recreation is hosting a special interactive adventure. Participants are invited to explore ten designated parks, where they will solve clues leading them to hidden boxes. Each found box will need to be recorded in a Parks Passport. Completing this challenge not only brings enjoyment but can also be rewarded with prizes redeemable at the Georgetown Recreation Center.
Moreover, a charming event called “Tales on the Trails” will take place along the Randy Morrow Trail, featuring a story walk that includes various engaging activities. In recognition of members, facilities such as the Recreation Center, Tennis Center, and Garey Park are distributing special items as a token of appreciation. Additionally, the Sunset Movie Series will feature a special edition at San Gabriel Park, highlighted by a “Roll and Splash Bash.” Residents can also look forward to a Dive-in Movie event at Williams Drive Pool scheduled on select dates throughout the month.
Blue Hole Park Renovation Plans
Aside from the celebratory activities, Georgetown Parks and Recreation is taking significant steps to redesign the Blue Hole Park, one of the community’s favorite local parks. Having not seen major upgrades since the 1990s and early 2000s, the current redesign initiative is crucial to ensuring the park continues to meet community needs after years of minimal enhancements.
Public interest in better connecting Blue Hole Park to downtown Georgetown has made this renovation a highly prioritized initiative. However, historical challenges related to flooding have posed obstacles to past infrastructure improvements. To ensure the redesign meets community expectations and needs, residents are encouraged to share their insights and ideas through surveys and open houses dedicated to the project.
Results from these surveys will be presented to the city council in February after the surveys close, allowing residents to play an active role in shaping the future of Blue Hole Park.
Promoting Literacy and Outdoor Activity
In a further effort to promote literacy while enjoying the outdoors, Georgetown has also launched a permanent StoryWalk at San Gabriel Park. This innovative feature consists of a mounted frame display showcasing illustrated books along a walking route. The first book included in this initiative is “Busy-Eyed Day” by Anne Marie Pace, with plans for future StoryWalks featuring a mix of stories, jokes, art, and important information about library and recreational programs available to the community.
The celebration of Park and Recreation Month in Georgetown highlights the importance of parks and recreation as vital resources that foster community engagement, promote health and wellness, and provide enjoyable experiences for residents of all ages.
