News Summary

Hutto has been identified as the 13th fastest-growing city in the U.S., achieving a growth rate of over 9% from 2023 to 2024. This surge is attributed to new housing developments and its strategic location near toll road 79, attracting both residents and businesses. City officials are focusing on enhancing infrastructure, including water treatment facilities and road expansions, to support this growth. Additionally, Hutto is adopting advanced surveillance technology to maintain public safety as it expands, with notable economic interest from companies like Samsung.

Hutto has been recognized as the 13th fastest-growing city in the United States, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The city recorded a remarkable growth rate of over 9% from 2023 to 2024, making it the fastest-growing city in the Austin area. With this significant expansion, Hutto has become the only Central Texas city to be included in the top 15 list of fastest-growing places in the country, contributing to a total of seven Texas cities represented on this prestigious list.

This surge in population has resulted from a robust influx of new housing developments, prompting local realtor assessments that underline Hutto’s appeal due to its strategic location and affordability. Sitting conveniently near toll road 79, Hutto provides easy access to various tech companies in the Central Texas region, enhancing its attractiveness to prospective residents and businesses alike.

As demand for infrastructure expands alongside the city’s rapid growth, city officials have noted the strain on existing city resources. Matthew Rector, the city engineer, highlighted the increasing need for improvements in water capacity, treatment plants, and road expansions to accommodate the growing population effectively. City officials, including Cheney Gamboa, the director of economic development, emphasize the importance of balancing quality of life with developing business infrastructure to support Hutto’s ongoing expansion.

The city is also witnessing interest from notable companies. For example, a potential Swedish business is collaborating with Samsung and has commenced the construction of new office facilities in Hutto, further indicating the city’s economic development and increasing popularity as a business hub.

While Hutto expands, attention is also being directed towards enhancing public safety through technological advancements in surveillance. The city has made plans to bolster its surveillance systems, particularly by incorporating Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) from Flock Safety. In March 2024, Hutto’s city council approved the purchase of ten Flock cameras for nearly $66,000, followed in February 2025 by the approval of six additional cameras for an estimated $20,000.

The city’s mayor reported that the implementation of Flock cameras has played a vital role in maintaining Hutto’s impressive crime rate, which is 85% lower than the national average. Nevertheless, this advancement has raised inquiries surrounding the systems’ oversight, transparency, and accountability. Although no formal audits of the cameras have been conducted, Hutto’s police chief acknowledged the completion of informal audits to review the license plates scanned by these cameras. A formal audit policy is currently in development to strengthen the monitoring of this technology.

Hutto’s police department, which operates with a relatively small force consisting of 51 officers, leans on camera technology to enhance their law enforcement capabilities. The police chief described the Flock cameras as a “force multiplier,” allowing officers to manage their responsibilities effectively, especially within the context of a burgeoning population.

The city anticipates that the newly installed Flock cameras will be operational by the end of the year, with local leaders devoted to prioritizing safety as the city continues to grow. Meanwhile, Georgetown, another rapidly growing city in Central Texas, did not secure a spot on this year’s list, although it did surpass a population threshold of 100,000 in 2024. Hutto’s commitment to infrastructure development and public safety seeks to ensure that its growth continues to yield benefits for both its residents and businesses, paving the way for the city’s future.
