Traffic on I-35 during police activity

News Summary

I-35 is closed in both directions at Louis Henna Boulevard due to ongoing police activity, causing significant traffic redirections. Additionally, recent accidents have increased delays in North Austin and Georgetown. Authorities are also preparing for further scheduled road closures for construction next week.

Austin, Texas – Police Activity Causes I-35 Closure Near Louis Henna Boulevard

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a full closure of both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at Louis Henna Boulevard due to ongoing police activity. As a result of this closure, traffic is being redirected, with vehicles diverted to Hesters Crossing and, for northbound traffic, also to State Highway 45. Authorities anticipate that the road will be reopened shortly, although specific timing has not been provided.

Earlier, a crash on I-35 in North Austin also contributed to traffic disruptions. This incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in the 12000 block of northbound I-35. The crash resulted in temporary closure of the entire southbound side of the interstate, in addition to one lane on the northbound side. Emergency responders reported that one individual involved in the crash sustained significant injuries and was trapped in their vehicle. This person was extricated and subsequently transported to the hospital, however, their injuries were characterized as serious but not life-threatening.

In a related incident, I-35 experienced additional delays in Georgetown, where all lanes were closed due to a collision involving two commercial vehicles. First responders had to cut apart the damaged trucks to ensure safe removal from the roadway. During this incident, traffic was diverted to the frontage road at exit 259, further compounding the regional traffic concerns.

Beyond these immediate issues, TxDOT is preparing for future disruptions. Scheduled road closures on I-35 northbound for construction will take place next week, from April 14-17, between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. During these closures, northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane and the flyover from northbound US 183 to northbound I-35 will be closed. These upcoming closures are part of the ongoing Capital Express North and South construction projects aimed at improving traffic flow along this major thoroughfare.

It is worth noting that several previously anticipated road closures for the weekend have been canceled by TxDOT, aiming to ease the burden on motorists. To help drivers navigate these changes, road signs will be strategically placed to alert them of any upcoming closures and redirect traffic as necessary.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through these affected areas and to allow for additional travel time due to ongoing changes and construction activity on this significant interstate route.

In summary, both police activity and recent vehicular accidents have led to significant disruptions on I-35, drawing attention to the need for ongoing monitoring of traffic conditions and infrastructure developments in the Austin area. The community remains encouraged to stay updated on traffic advisories and to prepare for altered travel patterns in the days ahead.
