Leander – Leander police are investigating multiple theft-related incidents, including a phone theft and a shooting at a local liquor store that resulted in a fatality.
Authorities are currently searching for a suspect involved in a phone theft that occurred at a Valero gas station located at 1701 S US 183 in early June. The victim left their phone unattended in the restroom and discovered it missing upon returning. The suspect allegedly utilized the stolen phone to compromise the victim’s identity and attempted to extort a payment from them. Communication between the suspect and victim ceased after the latter refused to comply with the blackmail demand. It has been reported that the suspect was a frequent customer at the gas station, but has not been seen since the incident. Police urge anyone with information about this case to contact Detective Motz via email, indicating case #25-1707.
In a separate matter, Leander police are seeking two persons of interest related to a theft that occurred on May 10 at approximately 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of US 183 South. The individuals were observed leaving the area in a white Ford pickup truck that was towing a black rented box trailer. Tips pertaining to this case should be directed to Officer Jack Pliska via email and must reference case #25-1438.
In a more serious incident, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting that took place at Leander Liquors in the 2400 block of S. Hwy 183 on May 31. The shooting occurred after three individuals reportedly attempted to steal several bottles from the store. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Johnny Cabrera, was later found suffering from gunshot wounds about 1.5 miles from the liquor store and tragically succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. At this time, no charges have been filed against the store clerk involved in the shooting, as the investigation is ongoing. The findings will be reviewed by the Williamson County District Attorney’s Office.
Witnesses to the Memorial Day incident are encouraged to provide information or video evidence to assist in the investigation. The case has prompted discussions surrounding the use of force in retail theft situations, as Cabrera’s mother expressed heartbreak over her son’s death and has raised concerns regarding the escalation of events and potential non-lethal measures that could have been employed in the face of theft.
These incidents highlight ongoing challenges within the community regarding theft and the ensuing response from local law enforcement. As investigations progress, Leander police remain dedicated to ensuring public safety and resolving ongoing issues related to theft and violence.
Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police. Cooperation between the community and law enforcement officials plays a crucial role in addressing these matters and maintaining safety in Leander.
