Cedar Park Fire Chief James Mallinger has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Mallinger’s career in fire service began in 1989 as a volunteer firefighter. He joined the Cedar Park Fire Department in 1996, where he advanced through various ranks over nearly three decades. In 2012, after holding two interim positions, he became the fire chief. His journey within the department reflects a commitment to public safety and leadership in emergency management, as he served as the city’s emergency management coordinator for six years.
Under Mallinger’s leadership, the Cedar Park Fire Department consists of 92 firefighters and four civilian staff members, operating with an annual budget of $16.8 million. The department is known for its professionalism and dedication to protecting the community it serves.
Mallinger is also an adjunct instructor with both the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) and Austin Community College, where he contributes to the education of future firefighters. He holds advanced degrees from Texas State University along with credentials from Austin Community College and Texas A&M’s Recruit Fire School. His qualifications include being a certified Fire Service Chief Executive Officer, Executive Fire Officer, and Chief Fire Officer, showcasing a well-rounded understanding of fire safety and administration.
Mallinger’s influence extends beyond Cedar Park as he currently serves as the Vice President of the Capital Area Fire Chiefs Association and is a past president of both the Williamson County and Texas Fire Chiefs Associations. His involvement in these associations highlights his leadership role within the broader firefighting community. He also contributes to advisory boards for fire programs at Austin Community College and Texas State University, emphasizing the importance of education in the fire service.
Mallinger’s appointment to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection includes a term that is set to expire on February 1, 2029.
