Interior of the new neonatal intensive care unit at Baylor Scott & White in Round Rock

News Summary

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock has launched a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as part of a $220 million expansion. This facility will provide local care for premature and complex infants, reducing the need for transfers to Austin hospitals. The NICU, classified as Level III, features private rooms designed for family comfort and is expected to meet the rising healthcare demands in Williamson County.

Round Rock, Texas — Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock has officially opened its new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as part of a significant $220 million expansion project that has doubled the hospital’s size. This new facility directly addresses the pressing need for local care for premature and medically complex infants, eliminating the necessity for transferring these vulnerable patients to hospitals in Austin.

Prior to the NICU’s launch, newborns requiring specialized care were transported by either ambulance or helicopter to facilities such as Dell Children’s Medical Center, St. David’s Medical Center, or McLane Children’s Hospital. The establishment of the NICU now provides families in Williamson County with access to critical neonatal services without the burdensome transfers that were previously required.

The new NICU is classified as a Level III facility, capable of caring for premature infants born at 24 weeks or older, provided they do not require immediate surgical intervention or exhibit severe cardiac issues. This capability is particularly important as Williamson County lacks both Level III and Level IV NICU options, representing a significant gap in local neonatal care services.

Facilities and Features

Designed with the needs of families in mind, the NICU includes all private rooms, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for both infants and their parents. There are a total of 11 rooms, including one specifically designed for twins. Each room is equipped with an isolette for the baby, a recliner for parents, a pull-out sofa bed, a private bathroom, and a station for breast milk storage.

One of the standout features of the new NICU is the ability for parents to be close to their babies during recovery. Families can remain with their newborns as much as they wish once the parents are cleared for hospital release. In addition, the NICU offers remote web camera access, allowing parents to monitor their infants even when they are not physically present. There are also accommodations for parents wishing to stay overnight, with two master bedroom setups that include a queen-size bed and a bassinet for infants.

Support Facilities

Other important facilities within the NICU include a consultation room, a waiting room for family members, and a designated area designed for grieving families, which acknowledges the emotional challenges that some families may face during their time in the unit.

Community Growth and Future Needs

Over the past five years, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock has experienced a 30% increase in overall patient numbers and a remarkable 40% rise in baby deliveries, evidencing the growing demand for healthcare services in the area. This surge correlates with the rapid population increase in Williamson County, which sees about 4,000 new residents moving to the area each month. The hospital leadership expects that the NICU will reach its capacity within a year of its opening and are considering plans to either expand services or arrange for the transfer of infants to higher or lower-level NICUs if necessary.

The opening of the NICU at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock is part of a broader initiative throughout Central Texas aimed at enhancing neonatal care in response to the increasing population and healthcare demands. By providing specialized services closer to home, the hospital aims to support families during some of their most critical moments.
