Kyle, Texas – Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) has awarded $100,000 in scholarships to 25 students this spring, marking a significant investment in the educational futures of local youth. The scholarships, which ranged from $3,000 to $5,000, were distributed after a competitive selection process involving nearly 500 applicants.

The scholarship recipients come from various high schools across PEC’s service area, which encompasses members in 23 different school districts and approximately 34 public high schools. Since the scholarship program began in 1999, PEC has awarded a total of $1.6 million to nearly 900 students aspiring to further their education. The scholarship funds can be used for tuition at colleges, universities, technical, or trade schools of the recipients’ choice.

Details of the Scholarship Recipients

This year’s recipients included:

  • $5,000 recipients: Maia Martin, Anella Mason, Joshua Burgos Rivera, Kamiily Visser, Allison Yao.
  • $4,000 recipients: Karson Bye, Cayden Eastwood, Paige Gately, Zachary Haley, Alexis Hawkins, Samantha Jameson, Wayne Jurica, Raul Lopez, Aiden Martinez, Deetya Pai, Ian Rowan, Weiss Stanley, Henry Vanicek, Alexia Ylinen, and Christien Zimmerman.
  • $3,000 recipients: Tanner Gibbons, Caleb Lackey, Landon Loerwald, Katelyn Anne Martin, and one adult/nontraditional student, Sarah Hemmitt from Austin Community College.

A Celebration to Honor Recipients

A reception took place on May 2 at EVO Entertainment in Kyle to celebrate this year’s scholarship recipients. This event highlighted the cooperative’s ongoing commitment to supporting the educational aspirations of students within its service area.

Support Beyond Scholarships

In addition to the scholarship program, PEC also provides various educational support initiatives for youth. These programs include school visits, which aim to inspire and engage students about the opportunities available to them, and the Youth Tour, which offers students a chance to learn about government and leadership. Furthermore, PEC has introduced the Learn, Empower, and Develop (LED) program which helps students access essential career information and hone their resume-building skills.
