Pflugerville firefighters in action during a recent fire response.
Pflugerville firefighters responded to two structure fires, resulting in one occupant being hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials stressed the importance of smoke detectors. Meanwhile, the Pflugerville City Council discussed potential funding increases for local emergency medical services amid concerns over service quality. Recent incidents have reignited discussions around fire safety and EMS standards in the community.
Pflugerville firefighters responded to two separate structure fires on Thursday night, leading to one occupant being transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The first incident took place at a residence off Edgemere Drive, while the second fire was reported off Cameron Road, which resulted in no injuries. The Pfugerville Fire Department received mutual aid from Hutto Fire Rescue and Travis County Emergency Services District 12 during the response to the Cameron Road fire.
Fire officials highlighted the critical importance of maintaining smoke detectors. They urged residents to regularly test their alarms and change batteries at least once a year to ensure ongoing safety in the home. This reminder follows a series of incidents where smoke detectors played a vital role in mitigating damage and ensuring the wellbeing of residents.
In a related matter, the Pflugerville City Council convened on Tuesday to initiate discussions with Travis County about increasing funding for the local emergency medical services (EMS). The council’s attention to this issue reflects ongoing concerns related to the quality of EMS services provided in the area. Currently, Pflugerville allocates approximately $1.3 million annually to EMS services through Allegiance Mobile Health.
During the meeting, council members Rudy Metayer and Doug Weiss addressed funding for Emergency Service District No. 2, which encompasses the Pflugerville Fire Department, to the Travis County commissioners. An additional funding request of about $600,000 is under consideration, although negotiations regarding the exact amount are still in progress. Mayor Victor Gonzales expressed apprehensions concerning the training and equipment quality of paramedics working with Allegiance. In addition, Council Member Ceasar Ruiz discussed complaints he has received about Allegiance’s services, mentioning a specific incident in which a Pflugerville resident lost their life under potentially improper treatment circumstances.
The council voted on the EMS funding discussion, passing the measure with a 5-2 vote. Council members David Rogers and Melody Ryan opposed the motion. Both the council’s recent actions and the city’s historical challenges with ambulance services have prompted the exploration of alternatives, including past contracts with Acadian Ambulance Services and Allegiance.
This week’s incidents also follow a separate fire on Monday afternoon at an apartment complex located on Falcon Village Lane. The fire, which was reported around 2:19 p.m., led to the evacuation of some residents as smoke began to fill the area. The preliminary investigation indicated that the fire originated from a malfunctioning dryer. Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a working smoke alarm and effective response from fire crews prevented more extensive damage and ensured resident safety.
These recent events underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the Pflugerville community regarding both fire safety and emergency medical services. The upcoming discussions between the city council and Travis County serve as a crucial step towards enhancing the quality of emergency response in the area while maintaining a focus on resident safety as a top priority.
