Emergency responders managing a gas leak in Pflugerville neighborhood

News Summary

An emergency gas leak in Pflugerville, Texas, led to the evacuation of nine homes on Tuesday night. Emergency responders quickly managed the situation, ensuring residents’ safety as repairs were carried out. As service is restored, a new housing project named Cameron 96 is also under consideration to accommodate over 300 new homes in the area, highlighting ongoing community changes.

Pflugerville, Texas faced an emergency situation on Tuesday night when a significant gas leak prompted the evacuation of nine homes in the area. The incident occurred around 8:31 p.m. on AW Grimes Boulevard, specifically at the intersection with Quitman Mountain Way and Pecos River Trail. Emergency responders quickly located and assessed the situation, leading to immediate evacuations to ensure the safety of residents.

To reduce the risk of ignition due to the gas leak, electrical services were temporarily cut in the affected area. The Pflugerville Fire Department, along with technicians from Atmos Energy, worked throughout the night to manage the leak and restore safety to the neighborhood. By Wednesday morning, repairs on the broken gas line were completed, and service was gradually restored to approximately 18 homes that had been impacted by the incident.

In light of this event, residents are being encouraged to keep their utility contact information up to date and to familiarize themselves with the locations of utility shutoff valves, particularly as colder temperatures approach, increasing the risk of future incidents.

In a separate development, Pflugerville is also considering a new housing project named Cameron 96, which may significantly alter the area’s housing landscape. This proposed project is designed to accommodate over 300 new homes and is situated just north of Cameron Road, adjacent to the existing Carmel subdivision. The aim of the Cameron 96 development is to cater to the “middle market,” making the transition easier for individuals moving from rental apartments to homeownership.

The development plan outlines the construction of 85 traditional single-family homes along with 300 rental units spread across a 63-acre parcel of land. Additionally, the project includes provisions for public amenities such as a park, trails, and commercial spaces, contributing to the overall community infrastructure.

The developer, Urban Moment, received a positive recommendation for zoning changes related to the project from the Pflugerville Planning and Zoning Commission on August 2, 2025. A public hearing, along with a subsequent vote by the Pflugerville City Council on the proposed rezoning, is scheduled shortly, which will allow residents and stakeholders the opportunity to voice their opinions regarding this substantial housing development.

As Pflugerville continues to grow, both the gas leak incident and the proposed housing development highlight the ongoing challenges and changes in the community. The emergency response to the gas leak emphasizes the need for safety preparedness among residents, while the Cameron 96 project signifies efforts to address the housing demands of an evolving population.

Residents are urged to stay informed on both safety practices related to utility management and potential changes to the local housing market as decisions regarding the Cameron 96 development approach.
