Pflugerville Students Take Action Against Lunch Debt with Pfood Pfairness

Pflugerville, Texas – In a dedicated effort to combat student lunch debt, two students from Pflugerville Independent School District, John and Maxx Amador, have founded a non-profit organization called Pfood Pfairness. Launched in 2023, the initiative aims to raise funds specifically to eliminate lunch debt for their fellow students, ensuring that everyone has equal access to nutritious meals.

Over the past two years, Pfood Pfairness has successfully raised approximately $140,000, which has enabled the organization to provide more than 57,000 hot meals. Currently, Pfood Pfairness supports the nutritional needs of over 400 students every two weeks, highlighting the significant impact of their work in the community. In recognition of their contributions, Pfood Pfairness has been honored as PfISD’s 2025 Partner of the Year.

Addressing the Lunch Debt Crisis

The creation of Pfood Pfairness coincided with a concerning trend within the Pflugerville school district, which faced an unprecedented lunch debt of approximately $180,000 in 2023. The district’s policy for students with more than $6 in lunch debt includes providing cold cheese sandwiches—a meal that many students find humiliating. This practice not only stigmatizes affected students but also raises concerns about their overall well-being and ability to focus on their studies.

For those who have negative balances on lunch accounts, Pflugerville ISD allows for reimbursable meals that may include some entrée replacements. Students with traditional accounts are charged $2 for a meal, while those on reduced accounts pay $0.40. Typically, a lunch plate in the district costs around $3.15—a price that can be challenging for some families to afford consistently.

The Amador Brothers’ Inspiration

John Amador, who has been a student in Pflugerville ISD since kindergarten, witnessed the unfortunate reality of peers having their lunches taken away due to unpaid balances. This experience inspired him and his brother Maxx to take action and create Pfood Pfairness, aiming to eliminate such inequities in their school.

To support their initiatives, John and Maxx have organized various fundraisers and outreach events. Although John Amador is set to graduate soon, he intends to continue his support for the organization to ensure that the fight against lunch debt remains robust.

Support for Families in Need

Parents facing difficulties in covering lunch payments are encouraged to apply for free and reduced lunch programs, which are currently open for applications. These programs are essential for families struggling to provide their children with nutritious meals at school.

Looking ahead to the new school year, Pflugerville ISD has committed to ensuring that all students will start with a $0 balance in their lunch accounts. This initiative has been backed by recent legislative changes aimed at addressing student lunch debt comprehensively. The district has also allocated $30,000 to tackle accumulating lunch debt, although this figure continues to grow.

Looking Forward

Pfood Pfairness not only highlights the issue of lunch debt but also promotes a sense of community support within Pflugerville. The organization’s mission—to ensure that all students receive healthy meals without the stigma of debt—remains a paramount goal as they continue their philanthropic efforts to uplift their peers.
