News Summary

Southwestern University has dedicated the Davidson Stage at the Alma Thomas Theater in honor of alumnus Roger Edward Davidson, who bequeathed $1 million to support the performing arts. This tribute celebrates Davidson’s lifelong dedication to music and community engagement, and the stage will facilitate various performances, enhancing the university’s cultural offerings.

Georgetown, Texas – Southwestern University has officially named the stage of its Alma Thomas Theater the Davidson Stage in recognition of a generous $1 million donation from the estate of alumnus Roger Edward Davidson. This significant endowment honors Davidson’s passionate commitment to the performing arts during his life and his enduring connection with the university.

The Davidson Stage will serve as a vital platform for various live performances, including theater productions and concerts, enriching the cultural landscape of the university. Located within the Alma Thomas Theater, the stage benefits from state-of-the-art facilities that include a seating capacity of 720, an orchestra pit, acoustic shell, and advanced lighting and rigging systems.

Roger Davidson graduated from Southwestern University in 1949 with a degree in music. During his time at the university, he was actively involved in the performing arts, participating in the university band and orchestra. Additionally, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, illustrating his strong ties to campus life.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Davidson balanced a part-time music career while pursuing his professional endeavors. After retiring, he turned his attention to community engagement and the arts, notably becoming involved with the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra in Colorado. Serving on the Symphony’s Board of Directors since 2002, Davidson held the position of Vice President until his death in 2011, marking a lasting influence in the orchestral community.

In 2007, Davidson returned to Texas at the age of 81 to contribute to the rebuilding of the Kappa Sigma fraternity house on the Southwestern campus, further emphasizing his dedication to the university and its legacy.

Marie Muhvic, Vice President for University Relations at Southwestern University, highlighted the importance of Roger Davidson’s legacy and the impact of planned giving that his donation represents. The establishment of the Davidson Stage is viewed as a testament to the profound influence that alumni can have on their alma mater and future generations, showcasing the power of philanthropy in sustaining and enhancing educational and cultural facilities.

The naming of the Davidson Stage not only signifies a tribute to Davidson’s lifelong devotion to the arts but also assures that his legacy will continue to inspire and support students and performers at Southwestern University for years to come.
