In addition to House Bill 9, a package of legislation is underway that includes increased homestead exemptions for homeowners. Proposed Senate Bills 4 and 23 aim to raise the state’s homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000. They also propose additional exemptions for older homeowners and individuals with disabilities. Although these Senate bills have already passed the Senate, they are still awaiting a vote in the House.

Morgan Meyer’s proposal sought to increase the business personal property tax exemption to $250,000, while Senate lawmakers had suggested a lower exemption of $25,000, combined with state franchise tax breaks.

The property tax-cut package demonstrates ongoing legislative pursuits to lessen the tax burden on both businesses and homeowners in Texas. If approved, the new homestead exemptions could result in approximately $363 in annual savings for property owners, contingent upon voter approval in the fall.
