The University of Texas at Austin is set to begin construction on Mulva Hall, a new 17-story undergraduate business building. Slated for completion by summer 2028 with a budget of $425 million, the hall will create a vibrant learning environment with numerous classrooms, innovative spaces, and a focus on connectivity. This major investment reflects a shift towards modernizing business education at UT Austin and aims to enhance campus interaction among students and faculty.
Austin, Texas – Groundbreaking for the new Miriam and James J. Mulva Hall at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business is set to commence this fall. The eagerly anticipated 17-story tower aims to cover 373,000 square feet and is expected to open its doors by summer 2028, transforming the educational landscape of the campus.
The project carries an estimated cost of $425 million, sanctioned by the UT System Board of Regents. Funding for the initiative is in place, with $150 million already secured from donors, alongside $50 million from McCombs reserve funds, and an additional $225 million allocated by the university itself. A significant portion of the funding stems from a $40 million donation made by former ConocoPhillips CEO Jim Mulva and his spouse, Miriam.
The construction of Mulva Hall will lead to the demolition of the existing Dobie parking garage, making way for this new facility designed to create a “business neighborhood” on the campus. This development will enhance connectivity with adjoining structures, such as Robert B. Rowling Hall and the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center.
The architectural design of Mulva Hall places a strong emphasis on porosity, transparency, connectivity, and wellness, aiming to foster an engaging educational environment. The ground floor will feature prominent entrances from three sides and encompass a vibrant exchange area profuse with natural light. Additional amenities will include a café, a large learning auditorium, and inviting outdoor plazas.
Plans for the first six floors of Mulva Hall involve the establishment of 29 classrooms, a dedicated career center, academic advising services, and common spaces tailored for approximately 6,000 business minors. The top priority for these floors also includes specialty research laboratories focusing on data analytics and visualization.
The seventh floor has been earmarked for housing university leaders and deans, encouraging a closer relationship with students. The upper levels of the building will consist of faculty offices and entire academic departments, optimizing the integration of academic and administrative functions.
The design integrates various formal and informal gathering spaces, notably a meeting spot referred to as the Exchange. With the expectation that approximately 25% of UT students will take classes in Mulva Hall, this project represents a noteworthy philanthropic endeavor for a university building.
Modernization efforts for the McCombs School of Business are paramount, as the institution has utilized facilities dating back to the 1970s. The new building will enhance not just the educational resources available but also the aesthetic appeal of the campus, providing sweeping views of the UT Tower, Forty Acres, and the Austin skyline from various terraces.
Overall, the Mulva Hall initiative aims to broaden the school’s outreach to the community while promoting vital interactions among students, faculty, and alumni. This upcoming facility is expected to significantly contribute to the academic and social fabric of UT Austin, preparing students for a dynamic business environment in a more modernized setting.
