Conceptual design for the expansion of Georgetown Public Library to serve a growing community.
Georgetown, the nation’s fastest-growing city, is planning a significant expansion of its public library services to accommodate its increasing population, which has nearly doubled since 2007. With current space insufficient to meet rising demands, city officials and the Friends of the Library are collaborating on a comprehensive study to evaluate potential expansions. The proposed plan includes increasing the library’s square footage and enhancing literacy programs through mobile services.
The vibrant city of Georgetown, recently crowned as the fastest-growing city in the nation, is gearing up for a significant transformation in its public library services. In a meeting held on April 22, 2025, the Georgetown City Council rolled up its sleeves to discuss a bold and exciting long-range expansion plan for the Georgetown Public Library.
Since opening its doors in 2007, the library has witnessed a remarkable change. The city’s population has skyrocketed from about 46,000 to nearly 100,000, more than doubling in size! With an influx of new residents, library director Sally Miculek has pointed out the pressing challenges of maintaining enough reading materials on the shelves to cater to the expanding community’s needs.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the City of Georgetown partnered with the Friends of the Library to fund a comprehensive study aimed at evaluating potential expansions for the beloved community hub.
For this study, the city turned to Steinberg Hart, a renowned architecture firm based in Austin, to help craft a vision tailored to Georgetown’s needs. The team conducted an in-depth analysis of libraries in North Texas cities such as Round Rock and Cedar Park to forecast Georgetown’s future growth.
The findings were illuminating. It’s clear that the current 50,000 square foot library is simply not enough for the growing community. Experts recommend a substantial increase, proposing an expansion of up to 70,000 square feet—an increase of a whopping 40%! This expansion is crucial to ensure that the library remains a vibrant center for learning and community engagement.
While the preferred option is to expand the current downtown library, the city is also considering alternative spaces if physical expansion proves problematic. However, the aim remains to keep the main library in its current downtown location, making it accessible to all residents.
Currently, the Georgetown Public Library stands alone as the only library serving the entire city, making the need for expansion even more crucial. Alongside adding more physical space, the study suggests developing additional library branches and offering more community engagement opportunities, such as storytime events and job training programs, closer to residents’ homes.
Additionally, Georgetown is expanding its WOW!mobile program, which helps deliver books and reading materials to residents who may face transportation challenges, including seniors and individuals with disabilities. Plans are underway to double the size of this mobile library service, further helping to bridge the gap in access to reading materials within the community.
As exciting as these proposals are, the road is not yet fully paved. The current efforts focus on creating a comprehensive expansion plan, complete with budget estimates and timelines. This plan is set to be presented to the city later in April 2025.
Georgetown’s City Council is expected to cast a crucial vote on the proposed expansion plan in early 2026, specifically during the months of January or February. It’s important to note that any physical expansion will hinge on voter approval, which will go through the standard bond election process.
The community’s support will be pivotal for the future of the Georgetown Public Library as it navigates its next chapter. With the population booming and a strong focus on providing ample resources for its residents, the library is poised to become a hub of community learning, collaboration, and creativity for years to come. Exciting times are ahead for Georgetown!
